A loft storage system is only as good as the way you access it.

Safe, easy access makes the difference between a loft you actually use and one that becomes awkward or even risky. Choosing the right ladder and hatch setup is just as important as the boarding itself.

Timber Loft Ladder with Enlarged Hatch

Timber ladders are one of the most popular choices for a reason.

They typically come with a 1m or 1.2m enlarged hatch and the ladder is attached directly to the hatch itself. When closed, everything is neatly stowed away above the ceiling.

Benefits include:

• A larger opening for easier access

• The ladder folds and stores on the hatch, maximising loft space

• Smooth pull-down operation

• Strong, solid feel underfoot

Because the ladder sits on the hatch rather than extending into the loft, you don’t lose usable storage space above the opening. It’s often the best option when comfort and ease of use are priorities.

Aluminium Loft Ladder

Aluminium ladders are compact and practical, particularly where space is more limited.

They typically require:

• A 72cm hatch opening

• Or a minimum of 62cm in tighter situations

Unlike timber systems, aluminium ladders usually stow around 1 metre into the loft space when closed. That means you need to allow for clearance above the hatch area.

• Ideal where ceiling space is restricted
